Asking to build at spawn is a courtesy type of thing, just a little heads up for everyone.
everyone has their yellow paint.

Hey just a quick thought why don't we wait until the new Minecraft update comes out? The 1.11 exploration update? It could take a month, it could take three. Is it really worth waiting? waiting?? servers been going less time than Sam Allardyce was England manager (proper football reference!)?? think its worth the wait for update myself

I'm new to this map so it doesn't bother me either way would say I find "spawn" is a bit of a s*%t hole and surrounded by Mesa and desert the two most dull environments going so a fresh start may be the best answer.

I'm okay with a map reset. I haven't started on my big base yet, so thankfully I haven't put to much work into anything. I'll be sorry to see my inn vanish, but hey, no big deal.
As far as the spawn town controversy... I might be an odd one, but I actually enjoy the organic, sometimes chaotic, nature of our current spawn town. However, if we were to find the chunks that players spawn at, and build a nice open square there, that would be nice.
as for waiting for the new update... I'd be okay with that as well, or do the small world border idea as well. Either works for me.

I'm new here but I know the server is fairly new too. I generally don't think resetting a map so early on in it's life is a good idea. I haven't seen a lot of good arguments for a reset.
Sure there is a huge new update coming, but this world already has a world border and who knows when 1.11 will be released, and more importantly, stable. When it is finally installed on the server, it could be months from now and we will surely be itching to expand the world border we currently have. Maybe it will make real estate near the map's edge valuable…
Spawn is a little chaotic, but restarting the map just to clean that up is insane. This is a vanilla server, and the beauty of being a vanilla player is that we work through things other players would use commands to get out of. Restarting a map just to redo spawn is too unnatural for the vanilla experience. The whole server should have a say in the development of spawn but someone (or a small team of someone's) with a good eye for large projects should oversee it's development. A vanilla server's spawn should be large and sprawling, and mostly developed organically by the players over time but there does need to be some organization involved or it will become difficult to navigate. Ours right now is a little more chaotic than it needs to be but it could be fixed with some work from everyone.
I just found an unclaimed place to set up my base after joining on Sunday. I searched for thousands of blocks and stumbled onto much claimed land. I am about to start working on a large base. I am going to invest a lot of time in this base and I don't want to worry about my hard work being washed down the drain - i want to feel safe to work on large projects without the fear of a reset taking that work away from me. If we are going to do a reset so early on that feeling of safety is gone. Keeping that sense of security is critical to player retention on a vanilla server.
All of these issues that have been presented are fixable in a vanilla world, using vanilla mechanics. I think working together to fix them will be fun and give us plenty to do within our current border while we wait for 1.11 to be released, and then we can continue to play on this map as we spread out together.

I WAS okay with this plan until all this was added - This does NOT sound like a collective voice but personal decision on how things would go. Personally, I'd remove all this stuff as it goes against one of the main purposes for playing this game which is creativity: IF the server were to be reset this is what would happen: Up until the day that we reset it everyone will get creative on the old map, just to have fun. And only if they want creative. - makes survival server pointless The new map will have shops, just like our map has, but more organized. There will be a large 5-block wide road running in four directions. - Why 5 blocks? Who made that decision? No one will be able to build in town without permission, otherwise it'll just end up a mess like our map is. The shops will go out to about 50-100k blocks out, depending on how many players want shops. Once the shops stop there will be a residential area. - Who are they going to ask permission from? What if a GM or admin is not online when they player usually is? Think of spawn as a circle, shops in the middle with homes surrounding it. The houses can be however you'd like them to be, just not too big. There will be no large builds, or whatever that ugly mob thing is at spawn. I love the idea of it, just not the location. - Why a circle? Why can't I make my house as large as I want? There will be a few days where the spawn wont be ready for players, and that will suck because many people will get bored and leave, so we will try to throw in some mini-games that we can play from time to time. i metioned this in skype! Im for the general idea of a circle but not make it a set in stone "rule" EVERYTHING SHOULD be done as a community not hey this is how it is and no you cant change it. I like the chaos of our spawn it feels like we all made this our "home" our spawn with what we think it should look like. Make a general idea with the circle plan but anyone can build in it with out permission. And it doesnt have to be "designated" areas for anything. Thats my personal opinion on this 100% agree. It's okay to have a loose layout for spawn but letting it grow as organically as possible is the key to a great spawn. This sounds too controlled. Our spawn is a little rough around the edges but there certainly isn't anything so bad it can't be fixed in-game. As long as players are mindful of the overall layout for spawn when they set up a new shop there shouldn't be any need for us to request permission to build. Maybe require all players who build at spawn to be a certain distance from a neighboring lot (unless ok'd by neighbor) and no fewer than a couple blocks from a main road. simple restrictions to keep travel between shops are key to making spawn a destination on the server, and for making any shops there profitable.

Before I vote, since I am new I have a question. Does this mean that the next time people are unhappy we reset again? I really hate losing 2 weeks of getting things around, only to do it time and time again.

I really hate losing 2 weeks of getting things around, only to do it time and time again. Asking the very real questions that will determine wether players stay or not. I am here for the long haul, to invest time on a server and not just reset every few weeks when a couple players are looking for something new.
