It would be nice with a more clear policy on client side mods. Perhaps a whitelist or some general directions.
Here are some examples of client mods that may improve one's (Minecraft) life quality, but does give significant advantages (like minimaps, x-ray, etc.). I also added some considerations wrt. how they may affect balance.
Cosmetics:
OptiFine
optifine.net/
Has dynamic lights, which lights the area around you when you hold a torch.
Better Foilage
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/better-foliage
Fancy Block Particles
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/fancy-block-particles
Dynamic Surroundings
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/dynamic-surroundings
Sound Filters
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/sound-filters
Inventory Management:
Inventory Tweaks
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/inventory-tweaks
Can sort/transfer whole chests with at button press, which may have impact on game balance in some circumstances, like PVP events.
Mouse Tweaks
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/mouse-tweaks
Tweaks like tranferring items using the scroll wheel.
Mods providing info:
Apple Skin
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/appleskin
Shows saturation on hunger bar.
Chat Flow
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/chatflow
Set up filters to highlight your own name in chat, etc.
HWYLA
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/hwyla
Show info about the entity or block you are looking at, including redstone strength and mob health. The latter may be exploited in PVP events.
In-game Info XML
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/ingame-info-xml
Custom text overlay, like the debug screen, but without the mess. Can display things like coordinates, current biome and time of day. The latter makes the clock item unnecessary.
More Overlays
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/more-overlays
Display an X on blocks with a low light level. Handy for creeper proofing your builds without relying on the debug screen.
Just Enough Items (plus extensions)
minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/just-enough-items-jei/
Used like an ingame wiki. Show item repices, item usages, potion brewing etc.
Resource packs:
Xisumavoid's Vanilla Tweaks
xisumavoid.com/vanillatweaks/
Mostly cosmetics, but also tweaks like showing directional arrows on top of hoppers and making the pumpkin head overlay more transparent.
