The official server currency is lapis lazuli. This cannot be farmed and is only available via mining and occasional villager trading. The exchange rates may seem strange due to the fact that lapis lazuli is fairly rare and is also used for building/enchanting.
Please take note that these are guidelines and do not have to be followed whatsoever.

16 iron - 8 lapis
16 coal - 4 lapis
32 redstone - 4 lapis

These rates are actually crazy. Because of the fluid nature of MC (supply and demand changed dramatically), a constant currency which takes form as an item will never work. This means that we must have a currency which doesn't take form in material, but rather, is just an abstract concept that is impossible to counterfeit (like money). That brings the question: how does one make such a currency in minecraft?
The answer: bank notes. We would use books which contain 'validity strings'. What is a so-called 'validity string'? I'll explain with an example.
Crowned wants a cheque worth ten units. This is formatted as 'CrownedPanda:10'. Then, this is AES encrypted by a secret key (which is only known to me -- I shall be the banker), and the result is written in hexadecimal notation in a book, which is then handed out. If someone makes a counterfeit, I will be able to decrypt it with my key, and check for it's validity. Punishments for counterfeit will hopefully be discussed by the community.
All you need to know about this system is that it's military-grade, uncrackable, and actually really easy to implement into vanilla minecraft.
Of course, this is just a concept (but one that WILL work). It is overkill, but hey, it'll be fun.
What do you guys think?

Wait no, it would actually be formatted as 'CrownedPanda:10:date and time issued'.

i like being a demonstration Though i get the Concept i dont like the idea. Reasons being is Yes this is A great way for a Economy and isnt That "hard" to implement Its just the Novelty of a Set " item " or " Items " as a Currency that we Run as A collective community instead of one person. ( Again it is minecraft and I dont wanna be in debt kidding Aside ) I like your Concept since it works 100% but I feel The idea of a Currency that doesnt Rely on a " Banker " or A sole person For the Protection of the economy is more so What we should use ALSO Why Make it Un counterfeitable What if i want to Be a shady Counterfeiter that sells "Illegal" "Black Market Goods"

Oh don't worry, it won't depend on me. Each note is pretty much like a was of cash, the persons name on it is just the guy who got it from me. So basically, people give me items (which are then dropped into lava), and I give them the book (or books). I'm not relied upon for trades and such, only making the currency.
This also creates (and encourages) black markets. The books are encrypted, meaning that no one actually knows how much money is stored in a book, or even if the book that they trade with someone else is even valid. So it could turn out, when you take the book to me, that you have been ripped off entirely!
Some might hate that, but I for one also think it would be fun.
