Server Transit Network
What is it?
As you may know, traveling around the server can be a pain, especially with people building settlements hundreds, and even thousands, of blocks away from the spawn town. This is where the Transit Network comes in: a community project based around building a railway and so-called 'ice transit' across our lands, establishing a network of fast transport!
What would this look like?
For settlements that are closer to each other (within a few hundred blocks), traditional railway with minecarts will do. This is something that has been started.
Whereas for long distance travel, this is where the 'ice transit' comes in. According to Minecraft Wiki, boat on flat ice can travel at speeds of 40 blocks/second. In Nether, this equates to 320 blocks/second in relation to Overworld distance. That is four times faster than an average horse and five times faster than a minecart!
Ice Transit
With such speeds, ice transit is the fastest way of traveling in Minecraft, excluding Nether portals. An ice transit consists of a 2-block wide track, covered in packed ice. Packed ice, compared to ordinary ice, does not melt in bright areas. Since packed ice is a hard-to-find commodity, not all links can be ice transits! An additional constraint is that the links have to be in a straight line in order to achieve constant high travel speeds.
How can I help?
You can help out a lot with ice transits by locating any ice spikes plains biomes and posting the coordinates in this thread. This biome appears around snow biomes, and is one of the rarest biomes in Minecraft! Currently, there is one known ice spikes biome. Whereas for the railway network, just provide lots of iron.
For designating stations and stops, it is up to you to nominate your settlement to be part of the Server Transit Network!
